Detailing your Space Wolves model
The next step in my Space Wolves painting method is detailing your model. The first thing I always do at this point is I fill the recesses in the back of the leg armor with black wash (the area right behind the knee) I also fill in the area around the codpiece with black wash. The other area I do this to is the mouth vent. If I get black wash on any other pieces I quickly cover them over with Shadow grey and dry brush the little areas with shadow grey till it looks nice again. Covering up your mistakes and not just leaving them there is what will make for a nice paint job.
I then paint the bolter. I paint my bolters red with yellow imperial eagles or whatever detail in on it. You can use whatever color you choose.
I then usually paint the eye lenses. I paint my eye lenses red as well. I don’t highlight my lenses because I’m not trying to win a painting competition here. However, if you would like to feel free.
Next I paint the imperial eagle or whatever is on the chest. I paint mine yellow. Space Wolves sometimes have jewels in their armor and sometime they are in the middle of the eagle. I usually paint these a flat green, purple, or red color. I like to change it up to give some variety. I’ll usually dry brush a lighter color over the eagle to give it a little detail. It doesn’t take long and it looks nice. Again, if you get yellow on anything else, be sure to fix it as you go.
I’ll then paint all the furs. I paint my furs a dark brown or gray color. Then dry brush over them with a lighter color. This will make the furs look great and will give them some depth. You can even dry brush another color on the tip of the fur. This can give a great look as well.
All the trinkets on the model get basic colors. Same goes with holsters, grenades etc. For teeth I just paint them white and do a little border color on whats holding the teeth. Again, you don’t have to go crazy with the looks in this part. If you do it basic it will still come out fine. Your covering up your mistakes as you go right?
Last but not least are the shoulders. These can be a huge pain in the butt. But, if you take your time doing them they will make your model look a lot better. If your looking at the model I paint the right shoulder with Citadel foundation yellow. Games Workshop yellow’s are notoriously thin, so they don’t make a good base coat. So I recommend the foundation yellow. So I apply that and then paint it over with sunburst yellow. This is another Games Workshop color. I then paint a thin black line around the inside of the armor. Not on it, but as a border between the yellow and the armor. This really makes the yellow pop and it looks awesome. I then usually fix up the black line so it’s straight. Again, using the foundation yellow and sunburst yellow. You can do this blood claws on both shoulders. Blood claws have yellow on both shoulders in the end, so it works out. For the other shoulder I’ll apply white for long fangs, yellow again for bloodclaws and red for grey hunters. Wold guard would be yellow too. You can then add your transfers onto to the right shoulder. The left shoulder in my army is used for unit designation, (ie wolfguard, grey hunters, blood claws, long fangs, etc) I paint the left shoulder with a cool design I hand paint then put on all the troops in the squad. It doesn’t have to be complex. You can use the codex for some great ideas. I try to keep mine tribal looking. Just make sure your neat cover up your mistakes and your model will look pretty good!
